Heidelberg University opens US presence in New York

President Bernhard Eitel officially opened the university’s U.S. presence — “Heidelberg University is constantly strengthening and broadening its wide range of international networks and co-operations around the world”
Heidelberg University, one of the top-ranking locations in the world of international science and scholarship and Germany’s oldest university, has opened an office in the United States. Heidelberg University Association in New York supports Heidelberg University’s strong transatlantic academic co-operations, its student and faculty exchange as well as the close ties between Heidelberg and its Alumni in North America.

On Friday, October 10, President Bernhard Eitel officially opened the university’s U.S. presence. “Heidelberg University is constantly strengthening and broadening its wide range of international networks and co-operations around the world, especially with universities and colleges in the United States”, said Bernhard Eitel in New York. “We feel the need to further explore the field of international relations because academic and scientific work should not be hindered by borders or nationalities. The new challenges in a globalized world ask for the international academic community to work together in moving towards new scientific horizons and to join forces to address the emerging questions of the future.”

The new office in New York is an important step on the way to even closer relationships between Heidelberg University and its counterparts in North America. Located in Manhattan, the office will support existing collaborations, assist in developing new networks and creating joint degree programs and serve as a resource and general contact base for Heidelberg University and its North American audience.

In addition, Heidelberg University Association opened the U.S. Alumni Chapter for Heidelberg University’s former students, teachers and employees who reside in the United States. Heidelberg Alumni U.S. (HAUS) or Friends of Heidelberg University is officially founded on Saturday, October 11 in New York, with Heidelberg Alumni from all over the United States attending. The largest student exchange program between Heidelberg University and the United States celebrated its 50 Anniversary in 2008.

Heidelberg University, which in its founding years already explored close academic relationships which its European neighbours, has expanded this international outreach even further. About 20 percent of graduates and undergraduates and some 35 percent of the doctoral students come from abroad. In 2007, the university appointed a third of its professors from outside Germany.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2008 just named Heidelberg University the best university in Germany. In more than 622 years of higher learning and outstanding innovative research, Heidelberg University has become an international synonym for academic excellence. The new office in New York will assist in enhancing Heidelberg University’s international standing even further.
