Dear readers,

Spring has already arrived in Heidelberg: Everything is greening and blossoming, nature is awakening to new life. In keeping with this, we are sending you fresh and up-to-date news from the HAI network and your university.

The most exciting news for many of you is certainly the succession of Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Bernhard Eitel, who will step down at the end of September. In Focus, you will learn details about our future rector Prof. Dr Frauke Melchior, whom we warmly congratulate on her new position!

You will also find more interesting and exciting news in the other sections Career, Networks, HAIsociety and Donate & Support. With the following short overview, we would like to get you in the mood for the current topics and invite you to read on.

In Focus

A new time will also begin for HAI with a new university management, as Prof. Dr Melchior will not only lead the university from 1 October 2023, she will also be our direct contact for alumni relations. We are looking forward to the new boss. Another topic in this section is the event series "Heidelberg Talks Online" (HTO), which allows you to listen to and discuss an interesting lecture from all over the world on a fortnightly basis on changing topics from a wide range of disciplines.

Career

The career section is buzzing: We report on the first language course Business English, which HAI offered exclusively for members in the winter term 2022/23. Attention: The next course starts in May – registration is open! We are again supported by HAI members sharing their experience as orientation for career choice: Get to know two active mentors and a retired diplomat. With a film screening, we were also able to provide insight into the female startup scene in the Heidelberg region and the topic of female empowerment.

Networks

Two cities – two very different exhibitions or guided tours: In Heidelberg, HAI members took the opportunity for an exclusive and very personal guided tour through the special exhibition "To the Point – 100 Years Marie Marcks". In Berlin, on the other hand, things were a bit more factual: HAI members visited the Federal Archives as well as the exhibitions there. With the goal of bringing life back into the regional groups after the Corona Pandemic, the organizers set a successful starting point.

HAIsociety

High-ranking visitor in India: As part of her trip to India, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was a guest at the Heidelberg Centre South Asia at an event on women's rights and the situation of minorities and women in India. Dr Martina Pötschke-Langer, long-time head of the Cancer Prevention Unit at the German Cancer Research Center, was posthumously awarded the German Cancer Aid Prize 2022. Antje Vollmer, alumna and former Vice President of the German Bundestag, passed away after a long and serious illness.

Donate & Support

Thanks to your donations, students in need were again able to receive an Amirana Scholarship in 2022, enabling them to better concentrate on their studies and examinations. In addition, donations in the current year will support two young scientists from Chile and Italy. Further funds will be used for career development measures and transatlantic exchange. Every amount contributes to the implementation of valuable projects and supports people: We thank all donors for their commitment!
